Survey on DVD recorders - CHOICE # 335

  • 2004.09.15

A whole new array of DVD recorders are competing in the marketplace for buyers.

In a survey, the Consumer Council has included 21 models - 6 of them priced from $5,000 to $8,000 with built-in 80 GB hard disk (capable of storing 80 to 140 hours of material) and the 15 remainders priced from $2,000 to $5,000 without any hard disk.

Another important consideration is that unlike the traditional VCRs (Video Cassette Recorders) which use standardised VHS tapes, DVD recorders cannot be used for all the different formats (currently five) of DVD disk which are not fully compatible with each other as each has slightly different characteristics. A DVD recorder may record in at least two DVD formats.

Each DVD disk can store up to two hours of material using the standard recording mode. A recent test report of the UK Consumers' Association has shown DVDs to offer better picture quality than VHS tapes.

One innovative function which is not available in VCRs, is simultaneous recording and playback - i.e. if you come home in the middle of a programme, you can start watching from the beginning while the recorder continues to record the show to the end. You can also record one programme while you watch another one recorded earlier on the same disk.
