Bird watchers and horse racing fans will be delighted with the latest comparative test scores of 14 models of binoculars for their selection.
The Consumer Council has published the results of the test in this (September) issue of CHOICE.
The overall test scores were based on: optical quality (55%), durability (25%), and ease of use (20%).
5 samples outshone the others in overall performance and were awarded the top 5-point rating in the test scores.
These 5 top performers were priced generally at the higher end of the retail price scale, and cost from $5,500 to $18,500.
The rest of the samples performed differently with overall scores between 2 points and 4 points.
Included in the test are models designed for general hand-held use and include 8X and 10X magnification categories, roof prism and porro prism types. Some samples have special features such as dual magnification ratios, image stabilizer and digital image capture functions.
