Outdoor Wear - CHOICE # 364

  • 2007.02.15

2 Ws and 1B. That's the secret to choosing an ideal outdoor apparel suited for skiing, tramping, hiking or traveling.

2 Ws are: Windproof and Waterproof, and 1B: Breathable.

Using such criteria, the Consumer Council has evaluated the many different types of fabrics and styles of outerwear available on the market. Here are some tips for consumers:

  • A waterproof but non-breathable garment would be very uncomfortable to wear, as perspiration would have no means of escaping, thus condensing on the inside of the garment, leaving the wearer wet and cold.

  • For waterproof and breathable fabrics, some have a membrane laminated onto the inside of the fabric. The membrane is microporous, with millions of tiny pores, which are big enough to let sweat out but too small to let rain in. Or, some have a hydrophilic coating which can transport sweat away from the body.

  • Most of the windproof, waterproof and breathable garments employ a water-repellent finish on the outside to increase its waterproof characteristics - water simply rolls off the surface in beads before it has time to wet the fabric.

  • Breathability and comfort are affected by many factors such as design features and the finishing of the garments.

  • Dirt can block up the pores and reduce the effectiveness of waterproof and breathable fabrics. Regular washing and care will restore their effectiveness. Bleach and fabric softeners should not be used.

  • Choose the specific design features needed for extreme weather conditions.

  • Hood that can be rolled up and stored in the collar, size adjustable and with a visor.

  • Front zip that has a two-way zip allowing opening the lower part for more ventilation. Front zip with a flap can prevent rain penetration.

  • Pockets that come in handy, large sizes and easily accessible, and with flap cover.

  • Others features include: extra ventilation under the arms or at the sides; cuffs with elasticity that can be adjusted with Velcro; and waists and the bottom of jacket that can be adjusted with draw cords to help trap warm air.
