LCD TV sets that are HD ready are supposed to improve on picture quality but do they come with better safety too?
The answer is 50:50. Out of 10 test samples of HD ready TV sets, 5 were awarded the top score (5 points) in their overall safety rating - based on clearance and creepage distances (50%), external flexible cords (20%), terminals (15%), markings and instruction (15%).
The 5 samples were put through a series of tests, passing all of a total of 15 clauses of international safety requirement on audio and video apparatus.
Minor non-compliance was found in the remainder 5 samples in 1 or more of the 3 safety clauses relating to lack of marking or users' instructions, insufficient clearance and creepage distances, and incorrect colour of the earth conductor inside the TV set.
The test is one of a series of joint projects between the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) and the Consumer Council to assist consumers in the choice of safe domestic electrical appliances in the market.
EMSD has followed up with the suppliers of the TV sets concerned.
The suppliers had agreed and undertaken to make corresponding improvements on the quality of their products or users' instructions. EMSD would also continue to exercise supervision of the safety improvement work.
For safety tips, users are reminded to take note of the following:
- If the TV set is not in use for a long time, use the main switch on the TV set to turn off the appliance rather than leaving it on standby mode by switching off via the remote control.
- Do not place the TV set in high humidity, dusty, high temperature environment, or under direct sunlight, or near a fire source. Allow enough space for heat ventilation.
- Clean the TV set according to the given instructions regularly. Switch off before cleaning.
- If the LCD TV is installed onto a wall, ensure the mounting frame has been properly installed for withholding the weight of the TV.
