The Consumer Council welcomes the measures adopted by the Food and Health Bureau in introducing legislation to prohibit inappropriate level of melamine in food, and in issuing daily updates to the public on the subject, to ensure public safety in the consumption of milk powders in Hong Kong.
The Council has liaised with the trade on the price and supply of milk powder. It has been assured that there will be stable supply of milk powder in Hong Kong. Further, the Hong Kong General Chamber of Pharmacy Limited has indicated that suppliers have not raised the wholesale price and has called on its members not to increase their retail prices of milk powder.
The Council will conduct close price surveillance of milk powder in the market and disseminate the information to the consumers.
The Council also urges retailers not to raise their prices; consumers not to join in any panic buying; and importers to ensure there will be stable and sufficient supply of milk powder.
The Council today carried out a price survey on baby milk powder in Hong Kong Eastern District. For details please refer to the attached table.
