Blu-ray Disc Player - CHOICE # 389

  • 2009.03.16

Yet another new consumer electronic in debut - the Blu-ray disc players.

In its first test on Blu-ray disc players, the Consumer Council reported on 9 models including one video game console with capability of playing Blu-ray disc.

These gadgets are used specifically to play Blu-ray disc which is a new type of optical disc that can store high definition movies.

The models were compared comprehensively for their picture quality, sound quality, error correction, ease of use, versatility, energy saving and operation quietness.

The results are most gratifying to Blu-ray fans. All samples were found to produce superb picture and excellent sound when playing Blu-ray disc.

But a closer look would reveal slight differences in picture quality when playing non-Blu-ray DVD.

Wide variations were found in their performance of error correction and ease of use. Some samples fared rather poorly on device boot time (switching on to being ready to use) and disc read time (initial read time from inserting to playback).

High scores were given to all samples for energy saving in that they consumed very little electricity during standby mode.
