Price Comparison Reports - Lam Tin District

The Consumer Council today (April 15) released its weekly price survey on a basket of 40 food and household items available at major supermarket chains and other retail outlets in the Lam Tin District.

In the analysis were listed the top 10 products with the most price differences found in this survey.  Top on the list was: Baby Powder 500g (from $13 to $29.9, or a price difference of 130%).

Following closely (between 101.1% and 69.5%) were: Chiu Chow Dumpling 8pcs ($8.9 to $17.9, or 101.1%); Soft Moose 165g ($21 to $39.9, or 90%); Cream Soda 2L ($9.9 to $16.8, or 69.7%); Chili Bean Sauce 227g ($8.2 to $13.9, or 69.5%).

The remainders 5 of the top 10 list (ranging from 67.4% to 60.8%) were: Beef Cheong Fun 3pcs ($9.5 to $15.9 or 67.4%); Bodywash Classic 850ml ($29.9 to $49.9, or 66.9%); E-mien Sweet Corn Flavour 75g ($3.3 to $5.5, or 66.7%); Premium Chicken Marinade 610g ($9 to $14.9, or 65.6%); Daily Therapy Shampoo 700ml ($36 to $57.9, or 60.8%).

Other highlights in this weekly price survey covering (a) prepackaged food products, (b) household and personal care products, and (c) fresh produce, include:

Prepackaged Food

  • A total of 21 items in this category at 11 retail outlets, covering major supermarket chains, grocery and frozen food outlets stores in the Lam Tin District, were compared for their prices.
  • Considerable differences between the lowest and the highest unit prices were recorded, ranging from 1.4% to 101.1%.
  • Overall, higher prices were recorded at individual major supermarket chains and frozen food outlets.     Some major supermarket chains offered bulk purchase price incentive, for example, some chains offered Sweetened Milk Spread 388g at "$14 for 2" averaging $7 each, and Chiu Chow Dumpling 8pcs at $25.5 for 3, averaging $8.5 each, thereby cheaper than the other outlets.

Household/Personal Care Products

  • A total of 15 items in this category at 11 retail outlets was surveyed, with price differences ranging from 10.4% to 130%.
  • Overall, prices at major supermarket chains and health-and-beauty chains were generally higher than those at drugstores.

Fresh Produce

  • Due to possible variations in the place of origin, quality, size or freshness of fresh produce, direct price comparison is considered not suitable.
  • A total of 4 items from 3 to 4 stalls at the Market Man Yau Kai Tin and 3 supermarket chains were included in the survey for reference of consumers.
