Timely tips on facemasks to fight influenza - CHOICE # 391

  • 2009.05.15

Here are some timely useful tips to help consumers choose and use facemasks effectively to arm against influenza.

The 3-ply surgical facemasks are recommended: the innermost layer would be water absorbent, the outer layer water repellent and the middle layer to help filtering.

A facemask should be big enough to cover the nose, mouth and chin. Those with a broad face should choose facemasks of larger size.

Make use of the metallic strip to fix the upper part of the mask across the bridge of the nose.

The tie of string or earloop should be adjusted in such a way that the whole facemask fits the contour of the face.

Facemasks should be properly stored in a clean and dry place and protected from moisture, insects, dirt and extremes of temperature.

Whilst wearing a facemask can help reduce the spread of the disease, consumers are advised to observe proper personal and environmental hygiene.

Consumers should wash hands before and after touching the facemasks.
