In the latest test carried out by Consumer Council on mattresses, body support performance of the tested samples varied. But all samples satisfied the general safety requirements of consumer products in respect of flammability.
Consumers looking for mattress with better safety level may consider samples passing the more stringent small flame test.
Among 25 samples of double size mattresses, 15 were bonell spring type, 2 LFK spring type, 5 pocket spring type and 3 PU-foam type, with prices ranging from HK$1,799 to HK$7,920.
In flammability test, all models were found in compliance with the European standard EN 597-1 smouldering cigarette test. But 7 models were found unsatisfactory in the more stringent EN-597-2 match-flame equivalent test. Local legislation requires domestic mattresses passing only the smouldering cigarette test.
Consumers who would like to use mattresses with higher fire resistant level can choose samples passed in both cigarette and small flame tests.
Other test items included body support, durability and comfort (humidity and temperature).
Overall, 2 models were found to provide better body support in dorsal position and 1 model provided better body support in lateral position.
In lumbar support test, two spherical calottes were pushed into the surface of a mattress to simulate pressure from shoulder and hip. The test then assessed how well the area between 2 calottes in keeping the base level to determine the sample's lumbar support performance. 2 models fared well and scored 4.5 points in the 5-point scale. 3 models were found to have poor lumbar support only scored 2 points.
In durability test, a cask-shaped roller was used to push back and forth on the mattress for 30,000 cycles, to simulate the use of a mattress for about 8 to 10 years. The hardness, mattress height and body support were measured before and after the rolling. Any changes in hardness, height (height loss) and signs of damage (coils and fabrics) were also recorded.
After the durability test, 23 models showed no sign of damage. However, 2 models were found to show different levels of damage including slight tear in the part of foam and pierced spring pocket.
The test on comfort (humidity and temperature) was conducted for two hours in an environment set at 25oC and 80% relative humidity. The relative humidity and temperature under the waist zone of a "strongly sweating" person lying on the samples were then measured. 3 models were detected with relatively lower humidity. There was not much difference in temperature among the tested models.
Consumers are reminded to observe the following fire safety tips:
- do not smoke in bed;
- do not leave burning candles, essential oils and the like unattended;
- do not allow kids to play with candles, matches or lighters.
When choosing a mattress, consumers can consider:
- try out different models to find the right level of firmness;
- shop together if the mattress is for two people.
