Safety first in use of fuel-saving cooking devices - CHOICE # 346

  • 2005.08.15

Accidents involving pressure cookers are not uncommon these days both in Hong Kong and the mainland.

In addition, recently a vacuum cooker was involved in a scalding accident, too.

These cooking devices both have the distinct advantage of fuel savings and with fuel costs rising the way they are, consumers are likely to be increasingly drawn to the use of these cookers.

But, naturally, vacuum cookers and pressure cookers are not without their potential hazards as evidenced in recent accidents.

Consumers are therefore reminded to bear in mind the hazards of inappropriate use and exercise due safety precautions. To ensure safety, the Consumer Council has put forward some useful safety tips.

Vacuum cookers:

  • Read the instruction closely before use.
  • After removing the inner pot from the outer vacuum pot, stir the food first before reheating, to avoid the boiling hot contents from splitting out.
  • Do not put the vacuum pot over fire because it may damage the material.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Do not open the outer cover while cooking, as this can result in loss of heat.

Pressure cookers:

  • Read and follow the instructions closely.
  • Choose the kinds of food that could not release particles that may block the steam vent.
  • Do not overfill the pressure cooker. Especially for food that expands during cooking, such as rice and beans, the amount needs to be reduced.
  • Ensure the pressure cooker is not cooking without water.
  • Be sure to check the steam vent before using to make sure it is free and clear of any food particles.
  • Replace the gasket or rubber seals when it is out of shape.
  • After the end of cooking, turn off the heat and release the pressure from the pressure cooker.
